Warriors Pick Up Win on Day Two of Hastings Classic
HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University earned another win at the Hastings Classic on Saturday as they downed Bethel University by a score of 64-52. The victory over the Threshers moves the Warriors' record to 2-2 in the early season.
The Warriors got the first two points on the board from a pair of free throws by Aryanna Harrison. Bethel responded with a layup, keeping pace early on. Gabby Beauperthuy had back-to-back layups to put the Warriors back in front before the Threshers added pressure by putting up a three-pointer to trail by only one point. A 9-3 run by Midland vaulted them into the lead, holding a seven-point advantage going into the final two minutes of the quarter. Bethel continued to battle, going on a 6-0 to chip away at the lead once more. A pair of free throws by Jenna Weber put the Warriors up 17-14 after ten minutes of action.
Midland started the second quarter strong with an 11-3 run, for its first double-digit lead of the game. Bethel went on a 6-1 run, attempting to battle back before halftime. Two more free throws by Weber in the final minute boosted the Warriors' lead to eight heading into halftime, 31-23.
After the intermission, Beauperthuy started the third quarter with a layup to boost the lead into double-digits. The Threshers responded with back-to-back baskets, a layup, and a three-pointer, but quickly found themselves in foul trouble. The Warriors went to the foul line on three straight trips down the court, sinking all six free throws to boost the score to 39-28. That sparked an 11-5 run to end the third ahead by 10, 50-40.
Bethel started the final 10 minutes of action with a layup. After trading baskets, the Warriors converted on back-to-back baskets from Weber to make it 57-45. They would maintain their 12-point lead to earn the 64-52 win over Bethel.
For the game, Midland shot 18-of-55 (32.7%). A majority of the Warriors' points came from the free throw line, as they made 25-of-35 (71.4%). The Warriors held the edge in second-chance points 20-3.
Gabby Beauperthuy and Jenna Weber lead the team with 18 points each, followed by 6 points from Bailee Hart. Beauperthuy registered her second double-double with 13 rebounds. Rubie Klausen added six rebounds while Hart dished out a pair of assists to lead the team.
Next up on the schedule, Midland (2-2) will begin conference play at home against Briar Cliff (2-0) on November 15. The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup is set for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff inside the Wikert Event Center in Fremont.
