No. 22 Warriors Sweep Midweek Matchup with Doane
FREMONT, Neb. – No. 22-ranked Midland University took on Doane University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) doubleheader on Wednesday at Schilke Fields. For the second straight day, the Warriors tamed the Tigers—earning wins of 8-1 and 3-1—after sweeping the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers on Tuesday.
GAME ONE: Midland 8, Doane 1
The Warriors' bats roared to life in the bottom of the first inning with five runs on six hits. After a leadoff single by Reese Floro, Matti Reiling drove in the first run with a triple down the left-field line. Three straight singles by Isabelle Pagan, Kamdyn Barrientos, and Jayci Reimers brought in Reiling and loaded the bases for Alexis Shepherd.
Shepherd drove in a run with a fielder's choice and later came around to score as Sophie De Rouin hit a two-RBI single to right, making it 5-0 after one inning.
Midland tacked on three more runs in the second. With Floro and Barrientos at the corners and two outs, the Warriors executed a rundown play. A misfired throw from the Doane catcher sailed into the outfield, scoring Floro and moving Barrientos to third. Reimers drove in Barrientos with a hard-hit grounder to left, and Jenna Lemley followed with an RBI single to the same spot. After two innings, Midland held a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Tigers, facing a potential run-rule loss, responded with a run in the top of the fifth. They put runners on the corners with a pair of singles and a fielder's choice before a sacrifice fly plated their lone run of the game.
Campbell Petrick went the distance in the circle to earn her 11th win of the season. She allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out three.
