Franco Leads Warriors at Grand View Open
DES MOINES, Iowa –Midland University was one of 41 teams competing Saturday at the Grand View Women's Wrestling Open, held at the Johnson Wellness Center and Sisam Arena.
Danielle Franco led the Warriors with a fifth-place finish in the 138-pound bracket, one of four Midland wrestlers to take the mat.
Kyra Gonzalez competed at 103 pounds. In the opening round, Gonzalez was defeated by Bentley Hills (Upper Iowa) by fall at 4:22. In the consolation round, she fell to Jamiyah Blount-Taylor (Indian Hills CC) by fall at 2:56.
Destiny Castillo went 2-2 at 110 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Castillo was defeated by Alicia Serratos (Life) by fall at 1:54. She rebounded in the consolation round with a technical fall victory over Rylee Rice (Indian Hills CC), 10-0, at 2:53. Castillo then earned back-to-back wins by defeating Alyssa Olson (Morningside) by technical fall, 11-0, at 4:51, before being eliminated by Isabella Salas (Carl Albert State) by fall at 2:55.
Eny Bravo represented Midland at 131 pounds. Following an opening-round bye, Bravo was defeated by Olivia Root (Davenport) by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:01. In the consolation round, Bravo lost to Abigail Ji (Iowa Lakes CC) by fall at 2:41.
Franco competed in six matches at 138 pounds. She opened the tournament with a technical fall win over HayLee Staker (Iowa Lakes CC), 12-2, at 4:39. In the second round, Franco earned a fall over Michelle Ramirez (Iowa Lakes CC) at 1:44 and followed with a quarterfinal victory over Esther Belzer (Central) by fall at 2:06. Franco suffered a loss in the semifinals to Isabel Reyes (Friends) by fall at 4:30 and dropped a decision in the consolation semifinals to Sara Daley (Iowa Western CC) by fall at 1:14. She closed the day on a high note, winning the fifth-place match over Florida Niyokusenga (Quincy) by fall at 1:36.
The Warriors return to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, for a dual at Doane University against the 12th-ranked Tigers. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside the Haddix Center in Crete, Nebraska.
