Warriors Take the Mat at York Open
York, Nebraska — The (RV) Midland University women's wrestling team competed in its first multi-team event of the 2026 season at the York Open. Nine Warriors took the mat Saturday at Holthus Field House.
Kyra Gonzalez wrestled at 103 pounds. In round one, Gonzalez lost to Rosa Ramirez of Waldorf by fall at 2:43. In the consolation round, Gonzalez was defeated by Jocelyn Prado of York by fall at 0:42.
Destiny Casillo competed at 110 pounds. In round one, Casillo defeated Gracie Huggins of Southeast Community College by technical fall, 12-1, at 4:35. In round two, Casillo lost to Aspen Sharpe (Unattached) by fall at 2:02. In the consolation round, Casillo defeated Grace Conner of York by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:02. Her day ended in the next round with a loss to Kiera Hersel of Colorado Mesa by fall at 1:56.
Taylor Hood, ranked No. 17 at 117 pounds, went 0-2 against NCAA Division II opponents. After an opening-round bye, Hood lost to Isabella Morales of Colorado Mesa by technical fall, 10-0, at 4:32. In the consolation round, Hood was defeated by Marjorie McDaniel of Colorado Mesa by technical fall, 14-3, at 2:27.
Alexis Oliver went 0-2 at 124 pounds. She lost to Kenadee Thoma (Unattached) by fall at 3:21 in round one and to Stevy Griffin of Iowa Lakes Community College by fall at 1:11 in the consolation round.
Andrea Frisque wrestled at 138 pounds and went 0-2. After an opening-round bye, she lost to Delarie Juarez of Colorado Mesa, 4-2, by decision. In the consolation round, Frisque was defeated by Heidi Schultz of Friends by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:10.
Danielle Franco grappled to a third-place finish at 145 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Franco lost to Rachel Burns (Unattached), 2-2, by criteria. She then won four straight matches in the consolation bracket: defeating Maria Sanfiel (Grand View Wrestling Club) by fall at 1:31, Maddie O'Brien (Baker) by fall at 1:17, Ashley Schwarz (Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa) by fall at 2:11, and Haley Sheppard (Friends) by fall at 1:40 in the third-place match.
Hallie Stone and Ja'Nya Banks represented Midland at 160 pounds. Stone earned a sixth-place finish. She defeated Carly Klein (Grand View) by technical fall, 12-1, at 5:26 in round one, lost to Billie Bonwell (Southeast Community College) by fall at 0:29 in round two, and then defeated Alondra Becerra (Unattached) by fall at 1:35 and Atavia Cain (Colby Community College) by fall at 1:51 in consolation rounds. Stone lost to Kaylen McAtee (Colby Community College) by fall at 1:12 in the consolation semifinals and to Janaye Wise (Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa) by technical fall, 12-2, at 1:13 in the fifth-place match.
Banks went 2-2. She defeated Olivia Smith (Dakota Wesleyan) by technical fall, 11-0, at 3:30 in round one, lost to Celina Cooke (Colorado Mesa) by fall at 2:48 in round two, defeated Ariana Mercado (University of Saint Mary's) by fall at 0:54 in the consolation round, and her day ended with a loss to Nevaeh Garcia (Grand View) by fall at 1:16.
Noelie Sedano finished second at 235 pounds. She defeated Brenda Valenzuela (Iowa Lakes Community College) by technical fall, 11-1, at 1:41 in the first round and lost to Brooklyn Robinson (Iowa Lakes Community College) by fall at 2:31 in the championship bout.
Midland will return home to host the Hastings College Broncos in a Great Plains Athletic Conference dual on Friday, Jan. 30. Competition begins at 6 p.m. inside the Wikert Event Center in Fremont.
