Midland Drops Tight Decision to Flames
OMAHA, Neb. – Midland University came up just short in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) women's tennis action on Sunday evening, falling to the College of Saint Mary, 4-3.
The Flames secured the early advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Callista Uchil and Noel Moreno defeated Ai Katsura and Graziela Dallagnol, 6-4. The No. 2 pairing of Yana Gupta and Abrianna Reynosa topped Andrea Vasquez and Lillie Johnston, 6-3, while Carolyna Truong and Iyaanah Pardiwalla completed the sweep with a 6-0 win over Ana Larreal and Malena Hernandez at No. 3.
Midland battled back in singles play, winning three of the six matches to even the contest before falling just short. Graziela Dallagnol earned a hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Pardiwalla in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Malena Hernandez followed with a strong 6-2, 6-2 win over Gupta at No. 4.
At No. 6 singles, Lillie Johnston rallied after dropping the opening set to claim a three-set victory over Darece Van Auken, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
College of Saint Mary clinched the team win with victories at the top of the lineup. Uchil defeated Katsura, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Moreno topped Vasquez, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2. Truong added the decisive point at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Larreal.
Midland (4-10, 2-3 GPAC) will look to bounce back with one week left in the regular season. First up will be a home dual against Doane (9-10, 4-1 GPAC) on Tuesday. First serve of the Senior Day matches is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Fremont High Tennis Courts.
