Warriors Fall to McPherson in Home Match
FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University hosted McPherson College on Saturday afternoon inside the Fremont Family YMCA. The Warriors dropped a 7-0 decision to the Bulldogs in a non-conference matchup.
McPherson claimed all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Laureen Van Drunen and Vanessa Hofer defeated Malena Hernandez and Ana Larreal, 6-0. The Bulldogs also picked up wins at No. 2, where Bella Ellerbee and Taimi Nashiku topped Graziela Dallagnol and Ai Katsura, 6-3, and at No. 3, where Eva Lesteluhu and Maria Luisa de Lama downed Lillie Johnston and Andrea Vasquez, 6-2.
In singles play, McPherson secured straight-set victories in five of six matches. Hofer earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Dallagnol at No. 1 singles, while Nashiku defeated Katsura, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. Ellerbee added a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Larreal at No. 3, and Van Drunen posted a 7-5, 6-3 win against Hernandez at No. 4. At No. 6, Lesteluhu defeated Johnston, 6-1, 6-1.
The closest contest of the day came at No. 5 singles. Vasquez took the opening set, 7-5, over de Lama before de Lama answered with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the 10-point match tiebreak, de Lama edged Vasquez, 10-8, to complete the sweep.
Midland (2-1) will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to Kearney, Nebraska, for a neutral site matchup with Missouri Western. Action is set to get underway at 12:00 p.m.
