(RV) Warriors Defeat Grand View on Senior Day
FREMONT, Neb. – On a windy but sunny day, (RV) Midland University hosted Grand View University outdoors at the Fremont High School Tennis Courts for the first time. The Warriors kept their momentum going with a 6-1 win over the Vikings, growing their winning streak to four since March 31. They find themselves with an 11-2 overall record while Grand View's record drops to 7-4 in its 2023 campaign.
No. 2s Kristina Khmelevskaia and Graziela Dallagnol grabbed the win against Elizaveta Ordinteva and Sofia Ordinteva (6-2) in the first doubles set. The other two matches in doubles were a fight to seven games instead of the usual six. No. 1s Ari Lumanog and Lainie Fanton took the 7-5 win over Melanie Ortega and Kanishka Gowthaman. Macee Thompson and Grace Felder at No. 3s won 7-6 (7-2 tiebreak) defeating Paige Adams and Alyssa Brant, which sealed the doubles' sweep.
Khmelevskaia at No. 2 singles sliced through the wind and her opponent Gowthaman, winning 6-2, 6-0, and claiming her seventh singles win of 2023. No. 3 Ivett Castaneda knocked off Ordinteva with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Senior Day. No. 1 Lumanog fell to Ortega 3-6, 2-6 giving the Vikings their only match win.
Felder at No. 5 won over Adams (6-2, 6-1) taking the clinching fourth point for the team win. No. 6 Fanton was consistent with her play over Brant winning 6-0, 6-1 while capturing her ninth straight win. Dallagnol at No. 4 took the final win over Ordinteva (6-2, 6-4) as the team celebrated their 2023 seniors.
Head coach Bruno Campos had this to say about his team's play against the Vikings. "Great day for Midland tennis. The kids came out ready to play under windy conditions and we were able to win 6-1 on both sides. Time to get ready for our next battle against the University of Nebraska-Kearney."
Midland (11-2) will go north to face the University of Nebraska-Kearney (12-9) on April 10. First toss is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center. The two teams have played only once before in 2017 as the Warriors fell 9-0 against the Lopers.
