Late Goal Lifts Warriors to First Win

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University faced off against Morningside University on Saturday evening in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup. After a scoreless first half, the Warriors fought to the very end, scoring in the final minutes, to secure their first victory of the season, 1-0 over the Mustangs

Through the first 45 minutes of action, both teams were scoreless, with Midland slightly leading in shot attempts, 8-7, while Morningside took the lead in shots on frame 4-3. The Warriors displayed offensive aggression with five corner kicks while holding the Mustangs to none. It was a physical contest, with each team committing six fouls in the first frame.

Following halftime, the intensity continued and in the 87th minute, things ramped up even more. Addison Castellanos launched a long ball that ricocheted off the crossbar. With the rebound loose in front of the net, Rosa Schellmann seized the opportunity, collected the deflection, and drove it into the net to break the scoreless tie. Morningside had a solid response in the 89th minute, but Kyla Pires made a critical save. The Warriors earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout over the Mustangs.

Pires made a couple of crucial saves during her 90 minutes in goal. She picked up eight saves on the night for the clean sheet victory.

Midland (1-1-2, 1-1-2 GPAC) will take a week's break before traveling to Forest City, Iowa to face Waldorf (0-9-0, 0-4-0 GPAC) in a conference clash of Warriors. The match will take place on Saturday, October 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Bolstorff Field.
