Warriors Open Season with Road Loss

ATCHISON, Kan. – Midland University officially began its 2024 schedule on Friday event as they faced off with No. 9-ranked Benedictine College on the road. The Warriors were dealt a 19-1 to the Ravens at Legacy Field.

Benedictine scored the first seven goals of the contest. Kierra Russell recorded the first tally before the Ravens' Chanterra Allen scored three straight goals. Kaylen Moore, Margaux Gelbach, and Haylee Strough all found the back of the net to put Benedictine ahead 7-0, with 4:18 remaining in the first period. Midland got on the board when Madilynn Edwards scored off a Ryland Nelson assist, to make it 7-1, with 1:51 left in the period, but that would conclude the Warrior scoring in the contest.

The Ravens added six more goals in the second period. Elizabeth Pluta scored, a player up, for Benedictine, and then Kaylen Moore added her second goal of the day, three minutes into the period. Allen and Pluta added to the tally before Allen scored again to put the Ravens up 12-1, and Russell added her second goal, just before the half to give the home team a 13-1 lead, going into the break.

Allen picked up where she left off, with a goal six minutes into the third period, and Pluta added two more to put Benedictine up 16-1 at the end of the third quarter.

The two third-period scorers were able to do the same in the fourth. Pluta added two more goals with Allen scoring one, and the score ended 19-1. The Ravens outshot the Warriors 27-5 on the day.

Offensively, Midland was led by Paige Bolton, who recorded three shots on goal, while Madilynn Edwards recorded Midland's lone tally. Chanterra Allen led Benedictine with seven goals on nine shots, plus added an assist.

In goal, Christina Myers started and worked through the first period as Kayla Bailey played in goal the final three stanzas, recording seven saves. Gianna Stalleti worked the net for Benedictine in the first half, while Molly Owen was the goalkeeper in the second. Both Raven backstops tallied two saves.

Midland (0-1) will host the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Sunday, March 3. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., at Heedum Field, in Fremont.
