Midland University Softball Takes Two From Briar Cliff
Sioux City, Iowa – The Midland University softball squad earned two conference wins over Briar Cliff on Saturday. The Warriors defeated the Chargers 7-3 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
"We played very well again today," said Keith Kramme, Midland University softball head coach. "Sammy Hislop and Sarah Leimser both had solid performances in the circle and the defense behind them was equally impressive. Adding to that, a very efficient offense and it equals a good day. We've put ourselves in a good position heading into our final doubleheader on Monday."
Midland pitcher Sammy Hislop held the Chargers to just four hits in game one. Hislop allowed three runs with seven strikeouts after going the distance from the circle. The Warriors scored runs in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 7-0 as they went into the final inning of the contest. However, Chargers threatened in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs before the Warrior defense could come up with three outs to land the victory.
Kayla Ritzdorf went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Emily Kmiecik was 3-for-4 with three runs. Liz Spooner went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Sammy Hislop was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Jennie Sayker and Sarah Leimser each recorded one run for the Warriors.
The Warriors earned another clutch win in game two. Kayla Ritzdorf opened the contest with a walk, stole second, and then scored on a Sarah Leimser single. The Chargers answered as they tallied a run of their own in the first. Midland struck again the in third inning as a Jennie Sayker double scored Ritzdorf. Sayker then scored on a passed ball to build the Warriors' lead, 3-1. Midland topped off the doubleheader as Nicole Andrews singled to score Rebekka Hammer in the top of the seventh to post the 4-1 win.
Sarah Leimser picked up the win from the circle after only allowing one run with two strikeouts in seven complete innings. Rebekka Hammer was a perfect 1-for-1 at the plate with one run scored. Jennie Sayker went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Nicole Andrews was 1-for3 with one RBI.
Midland University is 12-6 in the GPAC and 18-19 on the season. The Warriors will travel to Mitchell, S.D., to face Dakota Wesleyan in the final doubleheader of the regular season on Monday, April 29. The doubleheader is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
