Midland University Softball Splits with Doane College

The Warriors and Tigers split a doubleheader Sunday, April 21, in Fremont, Neb. The Warriors took game one by a score of 2-1 in ten innings, as Doane won game two 6-0.

"Offensively we really struggled as a team today," said Keith Kramme, Midland University softball head coach. "I credit both of Doane's pitchers as they worked effectively in both games keeping our bats quiet."

Midland and Doane played nine scoreless innings in game one. In the tenth inning, with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Tigers scored one run in the top half of the inning. In the Warriors half, Emma Aschenbrenner started on second base. Sammy Hislop reached first on a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a Doane error. On the play, Aschenbrenner was able to come around and score to tie the game at one. Emily Kmiecik would ground out to the pitcher moving Hislop to third on the play. Liz Spooner then drove a ball in center field for a sacrifice fly plating Hislop for the Warriors 2-1 victory.

Midland didn't record a hit in game one while Spooner led Midland with one RBI. Hislop tossed all ten innings in the contest allowing one run on five hits while striking out eleven.

"In game one we were very good defensively," said Kramme. "We executed at the end of the game to earn the win."

In game two, the Warriors weren't as fortunate as Doane jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third. The Tigers would then use a big fourth inning plating five runs on seven hits in the top half of the inning which included a grand slam.

Kayla Ritzdorf, Nicole Andrews, and Jami Redel all collected one hit a piece in the contest for the Warriors. Sarah Greder pitched six innings allowing six runs on twelve hits. Hislop threw one inning of relief striking out two.

"In game two we made some very good defensive plays," said Kramme. "Doane was able to come up with a big hit that put us in a hole."

With the split, the Warriors are 14-19 overall and 8-6 in GPAC play. Doane College now stands at 14-18 overall and 9-5 in the conference. Midland will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 as they host Concordia University. Tuesday night will mark senior night for the Warriors.
