Warriors Claim Two Champions at Salute to Service Open

ATCHISON, Kan. – The Midland University men's wrestling team competed in the Salute to Service Open on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Benedictine University at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. The Warriors came away with two individual champions as Dylan Atherton and Nate McDonald each claimed titles.

At 125 pounds, Atherton began the day with a 7-3 decision over Creel Weber of Hastings. He then defeated Braxton Moody of Labette Community College by fall at 6:36. In the semifinals, Atherton downed Kike Yanez of Barton Community College by technical fall, 15-0. He went on to claim the 125-pound crown with a 5-0 decision over Matthew Brock of Otero Junior College.

Hunter True competed at 141 pounds and finished 2-1. After an opening-round bye, True lost to Weston Ward of Central Methodist by fall at 2:57. He rebounded with a pin of Sebastian Rodriguez of Colby Community College at 6:40 and closed out his day with a 9-6 decision over Gavin Shoush of Central Methodist.

At 174 pounds, Jayden Adams went 1-2 on the day. Following an opening-round bye, Adams pinned Maximus Messa of Hastings in 3:49. He then dropped his next two matches—one to Rance Ridley of Benedictine by technical fall, 17-0, and another to Chris Galicia of Otero Junior College by fall at 1:34.

McDonald captured first place at 184 pounds. He opened with a 15-0 technical fall over Gabriel Orosco of Quincy and followed with a pin of S-Ron Hill of Barton Community College at 4:08. In the semifinals, McDonald blanked Corey Holmes of Avila, 10-0, before securing the championship with a 5-2 decision over Jeremiah Voliva of Avila.

At 197 pounds, Treyton Tweton placed fifth for the Warriors. He began with a pin of Max Knard of Avila at 6:31, then fell to James Soliz of Quincy by fall at 1:40. In the consolation bracket, Tweton pinned Chance Meggs of Labette Community College in just 41 seconds and went on to defeat Aiden Griffin of Hastings by fall in 53 seconds to claim fifth.

Midland will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa.
