Grapplers Earn Valuable Mat Time at Grand View Open
GRIMES, Iowa – Thirteen Midland University student-athletes competed at the Grand View Open on Saturday, held at the Ignit Sports Complex. Wrestling at the home of the 12-time national champion Grand View Vikings, the Warriors took on top-level competition from across the Midwest in two divisions.
Midland had four wrestlers compete in the Open Division. At 125 pounds, Dylan Atherton went 0-2. After receiving a first-round bye, Atherton dropped a major decision to Brandon Paez of Northern Iowa, 14-4. Following a second-round consolation bye, Atherton's day ended in the third consolation round with a loss by fall to Nehemiah Ventura of Texas Wesleyan, ranked No. 22 nationally, at 5:11.
In the Open 184-pound class, Colton Horne went 0-2. He dropped a 13-0 major decision to Kendric Gordon of Avila in the opening round and was pinned by Gabe Commons of Benedictine College at 2:03 in the first consolation round.
Two Warriors competed in the Open 285-pound division. Remington Gay went 1-2. After a first-round bye, Gay suffered a 7-2 decision loss to Tyler Casey of St. Ambrose in the second round. He earned a consolation-round victory with a pin of Christopher York of Missouri Valley at 2:05 before falling in the fourth consolation round via a 17-1 technical fall to Ryan Boersma of Triton. The second Warrior at 285 pounds, Zeph Sivels, finished 2-2. After a first-round bye, Sivels recorded a 14-0 major decision over Jeremiah Morris of St. Ambrose. He followed that with an 8-5 sudden victory over Ryan Boersma of Triton. Sivels' undefeated streak ended in the quarterfinals with a loss by fall to Iowa State's Daniel Herrera at 4:28. His day concluded in the sixth consolation round with a 4-1 decision loss to Jake Boley of Nebraska-Kearney.
Nine Warriors competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. At 125 pounds, Kaydon Mueller went 0-2. He suffered a 20-5 technical fall loss to Dru Ayala of Iowa in the first round and was pinned by Calex Barta of Briar Cliff at 1:03 in the first consolation round.
Trevin Arlt competed in the 141-pound division and finished 2-2. He suffered an 18-3 technical fall loss to Kane Butrick of Northwestern in the first round. After a first-round consolation bye, Arlt pinned Gant Browning of Hastings at 1:45 and defeated Conner Blessing of Rio Grande 4-1 in the third consolation round. Arlt's day ended in the fourth consolation round with a 19-1 technical fall loss to Daniel Vines of Cloud County CC.
At 149 pounds, Zion Amerson went 1-2. He was pinned by Andres Flores of Labette CC at 4:46 in the opening round but rebounded with a pin of Trey Miller of William Penn at 4:01 in the first consolation round. Amerson's day ended in the second consolation round with a 5-1 decision loss to Trevor Reinke of Southeast CC.
Two Warriors competed in the 157-pound division. Francisco Duran finished 1-2. He opened with a 10-3 decision over Ronald Hooten of Waldorf before being pinned by Chance Davis of Iowa Central CC at 2:49 in the second round. Duran's tournament ended in the second consolation round with a 17-2 technical fall loss to Jayden Morr of Southeast CC. Tyren Schaefer also went 0-2 in the 157-pound division. He suffered a 9-1 major decision loss to Kade Wersland of York in the first round and an 8-6 decision loss to Chad Herbert of Labette CC in the second consolation round following a first-round bye.
At 165 pounds, McKayde Clevenger went 0-2. After receiving a first-round bye, Clevenger was pinned by Michael Foster of Briar Cliff at 2:37. He then suffered a second-round consolation loss by fall to Creed Williams of Lindsey Wilson at 1:59. Logan Millikan also wrestled at 165 pounds and finished 0-2. He lost by fall to Ian Grubbs of Grand View at 1:43 in the first round and to Sam Duling of CC at 2:48 in the second consolation round.
At 184 pounds, Treyton Tweton finished 1-2. Following a first-round bye, Tweton was pinned by Evan Farley of Minnesota State at 4:21. He rebounded in the second consolation round with a pin of Ellis Hughes of Waldorf at 1:28 before being eliminated in the third consolation round with a 13-2 major decision loss to Ethan Gregg of Briar Cliff.
Collin Stone represented Midland in the 285-pound division and went 0-2. He lost via a 16-0 technical fall to Antone Woods of Grand View in the first round and by fall to Darrell Leslie of North Idaho at 4:05 in the second consolation round following a first-round bye.
Midland will return to dual competition on Thursday, November 21, traveling to Atchison, Kansas, to take on Benedictine College. The dual at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
