Midland Wrestlers Gain Valuable Mat Time at MVC Open
MARSHALL, Mo. – Midland University saw seven competitors take to the mats at the Missouri Valley Open, inside the Burns Athletic Complex, on Saturday.
In the 125-pound division, Janson Pilkington represented Midland. In round one, Pilkington lost to Adrian Jimenez of Missouri Valley, by technical fall, 16-0. After a consolation round one bye, Pilkington lost to Jeffery Myers of William Penn, by fall, at 0:20.
Trevin Arlt was one of two Warriors who wrestled at 141 pounds. In round one, Arlt lost to Owen Uhls of Missouri, by fall at 1:27. After receiving a consolation round one bye, Arlt defeated his teammate, Adrian Delgado, by fall at 1:28. In consolation round three, Arlt lost to Corbin White of Fort Hays State, by fall at 1:46.
Delgado began his day with a bye in round one. In round two, Delgado lost to Tanner Frothinger of Nebraska, by fall at 1:52. Delgado's day ended with the loss to Arlt in consolation round two.
At 149 pounds, Zion Amerson began with a loss to Sammy Mendoza of Grand View, by an 11-1 major decision. Amerson defeated Zack Wicks of Graceland, in the consolation round one, by fall at 0:59. In the consolation round two, Amerson lost to Dailey Jennings of Central Oklahoma, by an 11-2 major decision.
Connor Rinn and Nate McDonald both wrestled for the Warriors at 184 pounds. Rinn finished with a sixth-place showing. In round one, Rinn earned a major decision, 14-2, over Ernesto Duenez of Baker. Rinn picked up another victory in round two with a 9-6 decision over Rodrick Love of Indian Hill CC. In the quarterfinals, Rinn dropped a 7-1 decision to Luke Shaver of Lindenwood. Rinn battled back in the consolation round. In round four, Rinn defeated McKinley Kemper of Lindenwood, by a 7-2 decision. In consolation round five, Rinn pulled out a 9-6 decision over Jeremiah Reed of Hannibal-LaGrange. In the consolation semifinals, Rinn lost to Austen Wetzel of Westminster, by fall at 1:03. Reaching the daily six-match limit, Rinn yielded the fifth-place match to Bryce Westmoreland of Fort Hays State, by no contest.
McDonald began his bracket with a victory over Braeden Stotts of Missouri Baptist, by technical fall, 15-0. In round two, McDonald dropped a 13-7 decision to Austen Wetzel of Westminster. McDonald bounced back with a consolation round two victory over Ernesto Duenez of Baker, by fall at 4:41. McDonald's day ended with a loss by major decision, 10-1, to Bryce Westmoreland of Fort Hays State, in consolation round three.
Ryan Kocovsky wrestled at 197 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Kocovsky lost to Montgomery Mills of Westminster, by fall at 0:50. In consolation round two, Kocovsky picked up a victory, by fall, over Joshua Martinez of Avila, in 5:38. Kocovsky bowed out of the competition after a consolation round three loss, by decision, 3-0, to Treviante Thomas of Graceland.
The Warriors will be back in action next Saturday, February 10, when they host Southeast CC. The teams will take the mat for an exhibition dual inside the Wikert Event Center. The competition is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. with Senior Day festivities slated beforehand.
