Warriors Reach Semifinals, Fall to Top-Seeded Morningside
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – Playing indoors at the First Serve Tennis Center due to weather, Midland University advanced to the semifinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Postseason Tournament on Thursday. The fourth-seeded Warriors opened the day with a 4-1 victory over fifth-seeded Northwestern College before falling to top-seeded Morningside University, 4-0, to end their postseason run.
Midland 4, Northwestern 1
Midland claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matchups. At No. 1 doubles, Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens defeated Jose Calderon and David Bomgaars, 6-3. Northwestern responded with a 6-3 win at No. 2, as Collin Harmelink and Mateo Flores beat Andrew Hammer and Jaime De Diego. The Warriors secured the point at No. 3, with Daniel Liebig and Martin Cisneros earning a 6-2 win over Arthur Vicente and Tanner Laube.
In singles play, Stevens won in straight sets at No. 1, defeating Calderon 6-3, 6-0. Cisneros followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Vicente. The Red Raiders notched their lone singles win at No. 5, with Harmelink topping Hammer 6-1, 6-3. Liebig clinched the match for Midland at No. 6, dispatching Laube 6-2, 6-3.

The Mustangs started fast in the semifinal, winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Marcos Menendez Hervella and Alexis Diaz defeated Hammer and De Diego 6-2 at No. 2, while Mathys Arnold and Jesse Gerth blanked Liebig and Cisneros 6-0 at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished with Starman and Stevens leading 5-4.
Morningside carried the momentum into singles, quickly sealing the match. Diaz downed De Diego 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Santiago Minetti defeated Cisneros 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, and Arnold swept Hammer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The remaining matches were left unfinished once the team victory was secured.
Midland concludes its season with a 9-12 record under first-year head coach Arianna Lumanog, reaching the GPAC semifinals for the fifth consecutive season.
