Warriors Edge Concordia in Conference Dual
FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Midland University hosted Concordia University in an early morning Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tennis dual on Friday. The Warriors defeated the Bulldogs 4-3 at the Fremont Family YMCA.
Midland got off to a strong start by taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens earned a 6-3 win over Nick Velders and Hugo Fuentes at No. 1 doubles, while Daniel Liebig and Martin Cisneros posted a dominant 6-1 win over Manuel Rodriguez and Grady Works at No. 3. Concordia salvaged a point at No. 2 doubles, with Santiago Abadia and Ben Chisholm defeating Andrew Hammer and Jaime De Diego 6-1.
In singles play, Midland and Concordia split the six matches, with the Warriors clinching the dual thanks to key performances at the top and bottom of the lineup. Stevens cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fuentes at No. 1 singles, and Starman followed with a gritty 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win over Velders at No. 2. Cisneros added a straight-set win at No. 5, downing Abadia 6-3, 6-2.
Liebig was leading the match at No. 6, 5-4 in the opening set before he retired and gave up the point to Michael Bedrosian. Chisholm and Works secured singles victories for the Bulldogs at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Chisholm defeated De Diego 6-1, 6-4, and Works topped Hammer 6-3, 6-1.
Midland (8-9, 4-1 GPAC) will closeout the regular season next week when it hosts Mount Marty (5-6, 2-2 GPAC) on Friday. First serve of the conference clash is set for 12:00 p.m. in Fremont.
