Warriors Edge Northwestern in GPAC Dual
ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Midland University returned to conference play on Friday as it traveled to taked on Northwestern College. The Warriors earned a road win over the Red Raiders in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action, 4-3.
The Warriors dropped two of three doubles matches but bounced back with four singles victories to clinch the dual.
Midland's lone doubles win came at the No. 3 spot, where Martin Cisneros and Daniel Liebig cruised to a 6-1 win over Shaun Bos and Tanner Laube. Northwestern claimed the top two doubles flights, giving the Red Raiders an early advantage in the match.
In singles play, Joren Stevens set the tone at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jose Calderon. Benjamin Starman followed with a gritty three-set win at No. 2, outlasting David Bomgaars 6-1, 6-7, 8-6. Cisneros and Liebig secured the remaining points for the Warriors. Cisneros rallied from a set down to beat Collin Harmelink 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, while Liebig made quick work of Laube at No. 6 with a 6-0, 1-0 (ret.) result.
Northwestern earned wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Mateo Flores defeated Jaime De Diego 6-2, 6-1, and Arthur Vicente edged Andrew Hammer 7-6, 7-5.
Midland (5-9, 1-1 GPAC) will be back in action on Sunday as it hosts Hastings (3-10, 0-3 GPAC) in another GPAC dual. Doubles action is set to start at 12:00 p.m. inside the Fremont YMCA.
