Warriors Fall to Augustana in Road Dual

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Midland University dropped a 6-1 decision to NCAA Division II opponent Augustana University in a non-conference men's tennis dual on Friday afternoon. The Warriors battled in several close matches but were unable to overcome the Vikings on their home courts.

In doubles play, Augustana swept all three matches to secure the opening point. Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens put up a fight at No. 1 doubles before falling 6-4 to Conrad Koch and Henry Dornbusch. Daniel Liebig and Martin Cisneros came up short in the No. 2 position, losing 6-3 to Jaxon Plank and Clayton Poppenga. At No. 3 doubles, Cayden Brandner-Stanton and Paul Maynard were blanked by Thomas Kano and Sebastian Garcia, 6-0.

In singles action, Starman picked up Midland's lone win of the afternoon at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set 6-3 to Jose Velasco, he responded with a strong 6-4 victory in the second. The match did not go to a third set, with the team result already decided.

Stevens fell 6-4, 6-2 to Dornbusch at No. 1 singles, while Liebig and Cisneros each lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Brandner-Stanton (No. 5) and Christian Ayala (No. 6) were unable to pick up games in their matches, dropping 6-0, 6-0 decisions to Joseph Plachy and Garcia, respectively.

Midland (4-6, 0-0 GPAC) is set to start Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Sunday with a home dual against Morningside (12-1, 0-0 GPAC). Doubles action gets underway at 12:00 p.m. inside the YMCA in Fremont, Nebraska on March 23.
