Warriors Rally to Force Playoff; Finish as Runners-Up
SILVIS, Ill. – Continuing their fall slate of events, Midland University took to the course at TPC Deere Run this week for the NAIA Midwest Invitational. The Warriors were tied for sixth after the first 18 holes of the event. On day two, they battle back by cutting 21 strokes off their score to force a two-team tie. Ultimately, they fell to Marian University in a team playoff.
Leading the way individually was Ben Ngelingkong who carded an even-par 142 (70-72) to place second. Billy Lyons and Cole Wilson joined him in the top 15. Lyons shot a 148 (78-70, +6) to tie for 12th while Wilson was one stroke behind with a 149 (77-72, +7) to tie for 14th.
Ethan Blair had the next lowest score with a 150 (80-70, +8) to take a share of 17th. Rounding out the Warriors' contingent of golfers was Spencer Wishon with a 170 (87-83, +28).
"Proud of the team this week. We showed some unbelievable grit battling back from 11 down," commented head coach Kean Kontor. "It's tough to lose in a team playoff. Pressure is a privilege and it's good to be put in those spots."
Up next for Midland will be the Nebraska Intercollegiate. That event, the final of the fall for the Warriors, is slated for October 6-7 in Axtell, Nebraska. Teams from across the area will tee off a week from Friday at Awarii Dunes Golf Course.
