Men’s Basketball Announces 2023 Signings

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University Men's Basketball head coach Tyler Erwin has announced the signing of six student-athletes to the 2023 recruiting class.

"We are thrilled about our 2023 recruiting class," said Coach Erwin. "Our coaching staff has worked extremely hard to put together talented student-athletes. Great individuals on and off the court."

Derek Merwick - Central CC / Elkhorn South H.S. (Neb.)

  • Helped lead CCC to National Tournament

  • National Player of the Week (2/20-2/26)

  • 12.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 5.0 APG

  • Led team in rebounds and assists per game

  • "Derek is a true point guard. Pass first guy who is always looking to get his teammates involved. Really excited about his athleticism. He will bring instant leadership qualities." 

Joey Rieschl - Creighton Prep H.S. (Neb.)

  • Class A - Honorable Mention

  • 11.0 PPG, 39% 3PT

  • "Can flat-out shoot it. He can really stretch the floor and comes from a winning program with a ton of success and tradition. We are excited about his talents moving forward."

Brayden Thompson - Allen County CC / Airline H.S. (La.)

  • 7.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG

  • Ranked 1st in blocks and 7th in rebounds in Kansas Jayhawk Conference

  • Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk

  • Conference All-Defensive Team

  • "BT is an explosive athletic presence. We are excited about his veteran leadership, shot-blocking, and rebounding ability. His defensive presence will be a huge asset to our team. His positive energy and attitude will be contagious."

Jeff Rozelle III - Gretna H.S. (Neb.)

  • 10.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG

  • Class A - Honorable Mention

  • State Semi-Finalist

  • "It's been fun to follow JR's progress. He has constantly gotten better each and every month of his high school career. His length and athleticism will be a huge asset to our team."

Alec Noonan - Elkhorn South H.S. (Neb.)

  • Lead Class A in Scoring - 19.5 PPG

  • First Team All-Class A

  • 2nd Team All-Nebraska

  • 4th in Class A 3 PT% - 44%

  • Lead Team to State Tournament

  • "Alec can really score it at all three levels. he can play multiple positions and has a knack for the ball.  He had a tremendous senior year at Elkhorn Southleading his team to the state tournament. We are excited about his growth and development moving forward."

Noah Futch - Jesseville H.S. (Ark.)

  • 29.9 PPG, 2,007 Career Points

  • All-State and All-Conference

  • Conference Player of the Year

  • Garland County 1st Team

  • 53 Career High Points

  • Conference Champs and District Tournament Champs

  • All-Star Nominee

  • "Noah can flat-out score it. He has good size and length and put up good numbers at Jesseville High School. We are really excited about his potential and growth as a two-player. "
