Warriors Rally for Road Victory
WINFIELD, Kan. — Midland University defeated Southwestern College 14-13 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) action on Wednesday night at Richard L. Lantz Stadium. With the victory, Midland has now won three straight games, improving to 9-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
After a scoreless first quarter, Midland took the lead when Lotta Wulff completed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Emily Ferron. The conversion was successful, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead with 8:44 to play in the first half. Southwestern answered two possessions later when Kennedi Hayes connected with Mary Jones on a 2-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining in the half. The conversion failed, and Midland held a 7-6 lead at the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Southwestern took the lead early in the fourth when Hayes completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Vivianna Solis. The conversion was successful, putting the Moundbuilders ahead 13-7 with 4:26 remaining. Midland responded on the very next play from scrimmage, as Wulff found Allaya Livingston for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors converted to reclaim the lead, 14-13, with 4:16 to play.
Midland sealed the victory defensively when Alyssa Butler intercepted a Hayes pass with 1:51 remaining.
The Warriors ran 36 plays for 221 yards. Midland completed 24 of 32 passes for 230 yards and rushed four times for minus-9 yards. Southwestern ran 48 plays for 255 yards, completing 28 of 43 passes for 227 yards and rushing five times for 28 yards.
Individually, Wulff finished 24 of 32 for 230 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Livingston recorded five receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown, while Ferron added two catches for 11 yards and a score. For Southwestern, Hayes completed 25 of 40 passes for 196 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Solis rushed once for 12 yards and caught five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, while Jones totaled nine receptions for 64 yards and a score.
Defensively, Midland was led by Ferron with 8.5 tackles. Butler added 2.5 tackles and the game-sealing interception. For Southwestern (6-5, 5-5 KCAC), Kennedy Wesley recorded 10 tackles, while Aiyana Sims and Lilibeth Rico each added an interception.
The Warriors return to action Saturday, April 11, at the Spring Sting Showdown in Lamoni, Iowa, hosted by Graceland University. Midland will face Texas Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. and Hesston at 4 p.m. at Huntsman Field.
