Midland Rolls Past Minnesota in Weekend Sweep
FREMONT, Neb. – Back on home ice after a pair of road trips, Midland University hosted the University of Minnesota in a Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) series on Saturday and Sunday. The Warriors dominated the Golden Gophers, earning a weekend sweep at Sidner Ice Arena. Midland rolled to a 14-1 win in Saturday's opener before completing the sweep with a 13-0 shutout on Sunday.
SATURDAY: Midland 14, Minnesota 1
The Warriors erupted for nine goals in the opening period. Kiara McGregor opened the scoring just 1:18 into the game. Jordan Bell made it 2-0 at the 3:00 mark, and Ashlyn Kuffler scored twice in a 12-second span midway through the period to push the lead to 4-0.
Brynn Tosh, Victoria Campbell, Grace Page, Callie Maguire, and Jaden Greenlee also found the back of the net in the first as Midland raced out to a commanding 9-0 lead.
McGregor added her second goal early in the second period. Taylor Bell scored at 11:08, and Kuffler completed her hat trick with 7:15 left before the intermission. Minnesota scored its lone goal in the period to avoid the shutout.
Campbell tallied her second goal of the game at 10:55 of the third period, and Maguire capped the scoring less than a minute later.
Brynn Knaus earned the win with nine saves as Midland outshot Minnesota 79-10.
SUNDAY: Midland 13, Minnesota 0
The Warriors stayed hot in the series finale, with Darbi Poole opening the scoring at 3:40 of the first period. Campbell followed at 7:25, and Poole netted her second goal at 9:19 to give Midland a 3-0 lead after one.
Midland's offense continued to surge in the second period with five goals. Campbell scored on the power play at 2:48, followed by a tally from Taylor Bell two minutes later. Callie Maguire then recorded a natural hat trick, including a power-play goal for her third of the frame.
With the game firmly in hand, the Warriors added five more goals in the third period. Campbell notched her first collegiate hat trick with two early goals and added a fourth later in the period. Davanna Ditto and Tosh also scored in the final stanza to close out the 13-0 victory.
Meghan Stewart turned away all nine shots she faced to secure the shutout as Midland outshot Minnesota 81-9.
Midland (9-0) looks to continue its strong start next week with four road games. The Warriors travel to face Adrian (3-2) on Thursday and Friday nights before a two-game set at Indiana Tech (3-0) on Saturday and Sunday.
