No. 16 Warriors Finish Regular Season with Split at No. 7 Drury
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – No. 16 Midland University wrapped up its regular season over the weekend with a pair of nonconference road games at No. 7 Drury University. The Warriors rallied for a 2-1 victory on Friday night but fell in the finale, 4-1.
FRIDAY: Midland 2, Drury 1
After conceding an early goal in the opening minutes, Midland's defense held firm in front of Liam Tereposky. The Warriors pulled even in the second period when Andy Larsen netted the tying goal at 6:22, assisted by Jack Olson and Jared Wisely.
Just before the second intermission, Drury was called for a roughing minor, giving Midland a power-play opportunity to start the third. It took just over a minute for the Warriors to capitalize, as Milan Breczko scored off an assist from Wisely and Larsen.
Down the stretch, Midland killed off a pair of power plays and held strong for the final 1:40 after Drury pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, securing the upset win.
Tereposky recorded 36 saves, while his counterpart finished with 32. Midland went 1-for-6 on the power play and successfully killed off six penalties.
SATURDAY: Drury 4, Midland 1
Drury struck first again in the series finale, scoring midway through the first period. The Panthers extended their lead early in the second before Midland answered back.
Following an interference penalty on Drury, Tommy Babb cashed in on the power play at 6:09, assisted by Karl Grafelman and Ethan Brown. However, Drury regained its two-goal cushion just over a minute later, taking a 3-1 lead into the final intermission.
The Panthers added an insurance goal in the third, going up 4-1 with 12 minutes to play. Midland battled through three minor penalties down the stretch but couldn't close the gap.
Tereposky made 35 saves, as Drury outshot Midland 39-23. The Panthers took just three penalties (all minors), while Midland was called for seven minors and one major.
Midland (17-17-1) will turn its focus to the Midwest College Hockey (MCH) Tournament, where it will open against McKendree (18-17-0) on Friday, Feb. 21, in Bloomington, Illinois. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m.
