Warriors Drop Weekend Series with No. 15 Illinois State

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University faced a tough challenge in a two-game series against No. 15 Illinois State University Redbirds this weekend. Playing a ranked opponent once again, the Warriors battled hard on the ice but suffered tough losses of 6-3 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday.

FRIDAY: Illinois State 6, Midland 3

The Redbirds seized control early, scoring midway through the opening period, and extended their lead to 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period. Midland managed to get on the scoreboard at the 9:47 mark with a shorthanded goal by Hugo Lukacovic, assisted by Logan Wotton while killing a roughing penalty. Despite another ISU goal, Midland responded with a goal from Zak Justice, assisted by Milan Breczko, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the second period.

The Redbirds dominated the early minutes of the third period with two quick goals, but Midland fought back with a powerplay goal from Zach Eddington. However, ISU closed the scoring to secure a 6-3 victory. Liam Tereposky recorded 31 saves in goal for Midland in the loss.

SATURDAY: Illinois State 3, Midland 1

After a scoreless first period, the Redbirds surged ahead in the second period, scoring three goals on 24 shots. Midland managed to net one goal, courtesy of Zach Eddington, with assists from Jared Wisely and Tommy Wardas at the 14:00 mark.

The third period remained defensive, with both teams holding firm. Despite Midland outshooting ISU 18 to 8 in the final frame, they were unable to stage a comeback. Nahuel Veyan made 36 saves for Midland, while the opposing goalie stopped 42 shots, resulting in a 3-1 defeat.

Looking ahead, Midland (9-17-1) will face another challenging opponent, hosting No. 4 Jamestown (19-11-1) in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, February 2-3, at Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont.
