Warriors Come Up Short Against Iowa State

FREMONT, Neb. – After Friday and Saturday's games were postponed due to a winter storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow, Midland University and No. 22-ranked Iowa State University took the ice on Sunday night inside Sidner Ice Arena. The Warriors picked up a first-period goal to take the early advantage but fell to the Cyclones, who scored a pair of empty-net goals late, 4-1.

Andy Larsen netted the first score of the game at the 12:26 mark of the opening period. Tommy Wardas collected the puck in front of the Cyclones' bench and hit Larson who was streaking down the slot for the goal.

In the second period, Iowa State found the equalizer just under seven minutes in, taking advantage of a misplayed puck right in front of the Midland netminder. Three minutes later, the Cyclones found the back of the net again, this time on a power play.

For the game, the Warriors were whistled for seven penalties while their counterparts had just three trips to the box. Despite all of the extra-man advantages, Iowa State was only able to score once on the power play.

With time winding down in the game, the Warriors pulled their goalie to get an extra attacker. With 1:43 on the clock, the Cyclones were able to get a breakout to score an empty net goal. As time expired, they got a second freebie to make it a 4-1 final.

For the contest, the teams were fairly even in shots on net. Iowa State finished with 29 shots while Midland had 28. Liam Tereposky had 25 saves for the Warriors in just over 58 minutes in net. His counterpart had 27 saves, including 12 in the final period.

"Coming into the weekend we felt good. Our goal was to start the semester off with a quality win," stated head coach Jan Dam after the game. "Unfortunately, we were only able to get the one goal tonight in the first. I thought we looked good in the beginning but played selfishly in the second. We took too many penalties. We've got to get better together as a team. While this was a great opportunity that we let get away from us, we have another great chance this coming weekend."

Midland (9-12-2) will look to earn its first win of the semester this coming week with No. 1 Minot State (17-4-2) coming to town. The Warriors and Beavers will take the ice on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Fremont.
