Road Woes Continue for Warriors; Drop Series to UMary
BISMARCK, N.D. – Playing on the road for the second straight weekend, Midland University traveled up to Bismarck, North Dakota for a pair of games against the newest member of the conference, the University of Mary. The Marauders, who took the first-ever meeting between the schools a season ago, added two more with a 3-2 victory on Friday night and a 3-0 shutout on Saturday.
FRIDAY: UMary 3, Midland 2
The Marauders went up 1-0 in the first period as they scored on the powerplay at the 9:44 mark. Midland was down two men after being issued minors for hooking at the 8:10 mark and for tripping 27 seconds later. In the second, UMary added an even-strength goal and took a 2-0 lead into the final intermission.
After the Warriors were issued a minor for cross checking with just over six minutes to go in the game, the Marauders struck on the power play to make it 3-0 with 6:30 on the clock.
Down the stretch, Midland battled. Milan Breczko scored at the 16:24 mark as MU added an extra attacker with an empty net. With 1:36 to go, Jack Royer found the back on the net off an assist from Zach Eddington, making things even more interesting.
With just under a minute to go, Midland called for an interference minor which ended just about any chance it had of pulling off the comeback.
For the game, the Warriors were whistled for five minors while the Marauders were sent to the box twice, both in the opening period.
UMary had the advantage in shots on goal with 47 to MU's 28. Liam Tereposky collected 44 saves on the night in the loss.
SATURDAY: UMary 3, Midland 0
After a fairly clean game in the opener, things got a little more physical in the first period of the weekend finale. Each team was whistled for four minors, mostly roughing calls, through the first 20 minutes. Neither team was able to take advantage as three of the minors were offsetting calls by the officials, meaning not powerplays.
With time winding down in the first, the Marauders were able to find the back of the net. With 1:59 before the break, they scored and took a 1-0 lead into the dressing rooms.
In the second, UMary added two more to its ledger. The first six minutes in while the second came 10 minutes later. Those scores would prove to be the final goals of the series for the 3-0 win.
Midland was outshot 36-22 with Liam Tereposky in net once again. He collected 33 saves through 60 minutes in the loss.
Next up for the Warriors (3-6) will be a three-game road trip next weekend. Midland will face Purdue Northwest on Thursday in Hammond, Indiana. On Friday and Saturday, they'll take the ice against Northern Illinois in West Dundee.
