Warriors Kick Off Outdoor Season at Bethel Open
WICHITA, Kan. – Midland University opened its outdoor track and field season on Saturday at the Bethel College Open, posting several top-10 finishes across multiple events.
On the track, Lucas Hjortkjaer led the way with a pair of event victories, winning the 1500 meters in 3:59.83 and the 5000 meters in 15:52.33. Henri Stoeckermann was close behind in the 1500 meters, finishing second in 4:01.06, while Koen Steenblok (5th, 4:09.43), Jonathan Mahoney (6th, 4:13.50), Braden Taylor (8th, 4:22.26), and Andrew Nunez (9th, 4:33.32) also placed in the top 10. Stoeckermann added another strong performance with a win in the 800 meters (1:57.55), with Mahoney finishing fourth (2:02.84).
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Felix Grave took third with a time of 11:04.03. In the 5000 meters, Mahoney placed third (16:14.76), while Jay Stoa III finished seventh (20:16.25).
In the sprints and hurdles, Evan Shepard finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.19). In the 400 meters, Chris Medlock placed fifth (50.79), and Noah Sherman finished sixth (50.92). The 200 meters saw three Warriors in the top 10, with Aiden Mountain placing sixth (23.32), Medlock eighth (23.66), and Jameson Painter ninth (23.78).
Field events saw Midland athletes shine, led by Robert Atwater, who claimed first place in the long jump (6.96m) and high jump (2.03m). He also placed second in the pole vault (4.50m) and fourth in the high jump (1.81m), tying with teammate Hudson McCafferty. In the triple jump, Atwater finished second (13.56m), with Garrett Guindon close behind in third (13.28m) and Jonah Martinez in eighth (12.68m). Guindon also placed fourth in the long jump (6.44m), while Kenya Ford finished eighth (6.14m).
The Warriors had several top finishers in the throws. Jace Voorhees was second in the discus (46.02m) and eighth in the javelin (47.63m). Josiah Meyer took 10th in the javelin (46.40m). In the hammer throw, Nate Osness finished fourth (43.49m), and Hunter Weirich placed 10th (39.89m).
Midland will continue its outdoor season next weekend at the Central Nebraska Challenge. The meet will take place in Kearney, Nebraska on Saturday, March 29, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
